Shoreham-by-Sea is a coastal town in West Sussex, England, and the origin point of the Knight family before their relocation to Hope's End, Derbyshire. It is where Christine Knight was admitted to Shoreham Haven Hospital on the night of 15–16 October 1987, where Robert Knight was born, and where Dorothy Knight and Christine died. It is also where Helen Marsden was killed in March 1989, in a disused outbuilding near the coastal path, three weeks after filing the report that named what Robert really was.
Shoreham-by-Sea does not appear in the saga as a present-tense setting. It exists entirely in documents, files, and the silence the Knight brothers carry about it. Robert has never been there. He builds the storm from their silence — from the way Ben's jaw locks at the first low rumble of thunder, and Toby's hand goes to his wrist.
On the night of 15–16 October 1987, the south of England was struck by what became known as the Great Storm — the most destructive extratropical cyclone to hit the country since 1703. Winds tore through the coast; the damage was widespread and catastrophic. It is into this context that Shoreham Haven Hospital was destroyed — or rather, it is the cover into which its destruction was folded. The official record attributed the hospital's demolition to storm damage. The actual cause, recorded in the Beowulf incident review, was a Class-A Kinetic/Thermal Discharge originating in Field Agent Knight, Benjamin — an emotional trigger described as bereavement and rage cascade following Christine's death.
683 people died. The records were purged. The site was cleared and replaced with the quiet lawn of a retirement home. Residents' accounts were disregarded. Photographs disappeared. The documentation was voided. The hospital, in Beowulf's archive, does not exist. Urban legend status confirmed. Do not investigate further.
The Knight brothers left Shoreham immediately, relocating more than 200 miles inland to Hope's End, following their mother's final instructions. The question Helen Marsden asked in her notes — hiding, or containment? — was never answered before her death. Both, is the most honest answer.
On 7 March 1989 — three weeks after Helen Marsden filed the final report that identified what Robert Knight really was — her body was discovered in the early hours in a disused outbuilding near the coastal path at Shoreham-by-Sea. Police confirmed the death was being treated as unexplained. Sources close to the investigation indicated the deceased had sustained injuries described as complex and of an extended duration, suggesting she had been held against her will for a significant period prior to death.
A photograph recovered near the scene, reproduced in a follow-up piece so small it sat beneath a garden centre advertisement, showed not Helen's face but her left collarbone. The mark carved into the skin was the Ars Goetia symbol for Asmodeus — identical to a woodcut Declan Marsden has been carrying since. He spent eighteen months obtaining a copy of the photograph through three separate channels. The original vanished from the evidence file within forty-eight hours of her death.
The Beowulf file on Helen's death was sealed within forty-eight hours. No inquiry. No follow-up. She is recorded, where she is recorded at all, as a cross-reference.
